Prevent Oral Disease in Children

Preventing oral disease in children has been my #1 focus since ending my first retirement from dental practice in December 1992. I believed young children were entitled to a better, comprehensive oral health education with their parents as oral healthcare educators and their teachers as oral health educators. Discovering ‘Brush Your Teeth” contributed to oral disease I created “Treat Your Whole Mouth”. Help me to “Let Children’s Natural Smiles, God’s Blessings, Last Children Millions of Miles!”

Prevent Oral Disease, Christmas 2004 and New Year Resolution 2005, “Treat Your Mouth” Rostrevor, South Australia, 16 December 2004

I take this opportunity to wish you all a safe, healthy, enjoyable and happy Christmas 2004 and following it, a successful, healthy, happy and prosperous New Year 2005.

Festivals, such as Christmas and New Year, are times of much rejoicing and of reunions with families and with friends. Significantly they are usually celebrated with an indulgence in fine foods and fine drinks beyond that which is regarded as normal. It is no wonder that the weight loss industry at this time prey heavily on potential customers who overindulge in these festivities and who then make a New Year resolution to be rid of undesirable, excess weight. I applaud all with that concern for general health.

My concern is oral health. I take this opportunity to give you a little, timely advice on oral health and on oral healthcare over this coming Christmas period.

Clean and protect teeth, gums and tongue soon after each main meal.
Follow snacks and high carbohydrate drinks with a thorough rinse with water to dilute acids and carbohydrates in the mouth.
Endeavour to restrict high carbohydrate intakes to follow main meals and therefore just before cleaning and protecting.
Teach the kids a new Christmas song, “4 Your Smile 2 Shine”. Go to http://www.allaboutasmile.com/ . You’ll find it there. The song lyrics are the new oral hygiene instruction “Treat Your Mouth”. It’s great family fun.

Also I sincerely pray I can convince you to make a very special New Year 2005 resolution to never just “Brush Your Teeth” again but to always “Treat Your Mouth”. Make it a family 2005 resolution. This simple, new oral hygiene instruction will more effectively help you to prevent the easily preventable oral diseases tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath. To make your mouth fresh all day, treat your mouth.

Best wishes from GarGar the Dentist.
